The Dutch diminutive
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper a new analysis is presented of the allomorphy of the Dutch diminutive suffix. There is one long allomorph (-etje) and four short allomorphs (-tje, -pje, -kje and -je). With respect to the choice between the long and short versions, this article compares two types of analyses, which appeal to the structural organisation of the stem (rather than to the segmental properties of the stem). In the first type, the allomorphy is accounted for with reference to the foot structure of the stem, while in the second the allomorphy is accounted for with reference to the syllabic structure of the stem (specifically the final rhyme). The two types of analyses are developed in order to account for all relevant data and it is decided that the syllabic analysis must be chosen if is assumed that the tense (allegedly ‘long’) vowels are structurally short, an assumption that is supported by their behaviour with respect to stress (for which purpose they count as light). The article then offers a non-derivational account of the choice between all forms of the suffix, including the short forms. # 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Acquisition of Diminutives in Dutch
The acquisition of diminutives by a single child between the ages of 1;5 and 2;5 is studied. The data cover the very first uses of diminutives. The child's use of diminutive word forms is analyzed quantitatively and compared with her mother's use. This comparison reveals a high correspondence between the child's and the mother's use, i.a. in terms of the frequency of the various allomorphs in t...
متن کاملDominance affects determiner selection in language production
Janssen and Caramazza (2003) show that when producing diminutives or plurals in Dutch, determiner information about the corresponding (singular) base form is active. This is reflected in a time cost for producing the plural or the diminutive with a gender-marked determiner when these forms and the corresponding singular or base form require different determiners. No such cost is observed when s...
متن کاملIs epenthesis a means to optimize feet? A reanalysis of the CLPF database.
Fikkert (1994) analyzed a large corpus of Dutch children's early language production, and found that they often add targetless syllables to their words in order to create bisyllabic feet. In this note we point out a methodological problem with that analysis: in an important number of cases, epenthetic vowels occur at places where grammatical morphemes (e.g. plural and diminutive suffixes) may b...
متن کاملLinking infants’ distributional learning abilities to natural language acquisition
This study examines the link between distributional patterns in the input and infants’ acquisition of non-adjacent dependencies. In two Headturn Preference experiments, Dutch-learning 24-month-olds (but not 17-month-olds) were found to track the remote dependency between the definite article het and the diminutive suffix -je while no such evidence was obtained for the remote dependency between ...

To better understand the cooperative or diminutive effects in the ternar...
